Meeting on codification of Garo customary laws held

SHILLONG: A detailed discussion on the issues of codification of the Garo clans was discussed on May 11 in the office of the Council of Nokma at Tura.
The meeting was attended by John F Kharshiing, Chairman, Grand Council of chiefs of Meghalaya, Spokesperson, Federation of Khasi States, briefed Skylance Momin, president, Charles G Momin, General Secretary, including other elders of Nokma Council, on the issues related to the need for the MDCs of the Autonomous District Councils, to understand the importance of codification of the various customs and social practices.
Kharshiing, said that the issue of correct spelling and list of the clans should be notified at the earliest by the respective Autonomous District Councils.
He handed over a copy of the latest list of 54 Hima/Elaka under Khasi Hills most of whom are yet to have their customs and social practices codified through separate Acts and rules. Kharshiing, urged the council of Nokmas to take up the matter of codification of the thousands of clans with the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.
He also informed the Nokmas that the KHADC has recently passed the KHADC Constitution of Traditional Dorbar Council and requested the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council to also move a similar bill for the protection and preservation of the customary social laws and practices.
