SHILLONG: In the wake of desire of all non Congress political parties in the State to come under one banner, coupled with the formation of the North East Democratic Alliance led by the BJP, the HSPDP on Sunday advised the electorate to vote a single party to power as coalition governments have not helped Meghalaya.
HSPDP chief Ardent M. Basaiawmoit, who is hopeful of a stable government in 2018, said the electorate are conscious about ushering in better governance in the State.
Stating that unification of regional political parties is not feasible as there can be no guarantee that no new regional political parties will come up again, Basaiawmoit said, “Unification of regional parties has been futile as there have been developments, even in the past, where new political parties have sprung up and there is no stopping them. The main target should be to throw the Congress out.”
Pointing that any change in the political scenario lies in the hands of the people, he said, “The electorate are moving towards a new trend and they desire a stable government. The aspirations for a stable government can be understood from the clear-cut verdict of the people in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Delhi.”
“Let us go to the people. We should not undermine them while understanding that the ground reality is to not favour the Congress,” Basaiawmoit said.
Indirectly, what the HSPDP wants is that the people should vote for the party so that it can form the next government in Meghalaya even as the party is keen to have post poll alliance.
It may be reminded that during the 2013 general elections to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, a total number of 17 candidates from HSPDP contested the elections but only four – Ardent M. Basaiawmoit (Nongkrem), K.P. Pangniang (Rambrai- Jyrngam), Witting Mawsor (Mawshynrut) and the then party chief Hoping Stone Lyngdoh (Nongstoin)   won their respective seats. Following the death of the party chief by-election was held to the Nongstoin Assembly seat which was won by HSPDP’s Diosstarness Jyndiang.
