SHILLONG: In its bid to clamp down on vehicle lifters in the State, Shillong Police has started using the national portal system VAHAN, a National Register e-Services of registered vehicles which would be of great help in detecting stolen vehicles.
With this system, anyone can type VAHAN followed by the vehicle registration number and send an SMS to 7738299899 and within minutes details of the vehicles and its owner are sent the mobile number.
Police officials said they are using the system in Naka checking to get accurate details of the vehicle.
“With this system we can know instantly whether the number plate of a vehicle is genuine or fake as we get information about the owner of the vehicle and other details through the system,” police officials said.
According to police, later they compare the documents of the vehicle along with the information generated from the system and they come to know if the vehicle number plate has been tampered with.
According to police, with this system they would get correct details of a vehicle even if the car lifter has changed the number plate.
With this system, police has been able to prevent some vehicle thefts in the city and now they are contemplating to use the system on a larger scale.
The idea of the system was mooted during the crime conference held in January this year.
Under this system, a person can also obtain details of the driver’s license of a person by typing SARDL followed by the license number and sending an SMS to 8790499899.
