SHILLONG: Following RTI revelation that Rs 1.35 crore was spent to ‘completely clean’ the Wahumkhrah river, KHADC CEM PN Syiem on Tuesday admitted that the work was not 100 per cent complete.
Only phase I of the cleaning project was completed, Syiem said.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday on the sanctioning of Rs 1.35 crore for cleaning of the river the KHADC CEM said that not the entire amount was spent for cleaning purpose.
“Money was also spent on waste bins, waste traps, proper drains, purchasing of mini trucks for Lapalang and Mawlai etc,” Syiem said.
“An amount of Rs 9.40 lakh has also been allotted to five MDCs from Nongthymmai, Laitumkhrah, Jaiaw, Mawkhar and Mawlai-the constituencies through which the river passes,” he added.
However, he pointed out that KHNAM MDC from Jaiaw missed the implementation of the scheme in his constituency since he did not submit a proposal for the scheme. “There has been no misuse of money, as most of it went to construction purposes,” Syiem concluded.
It may be mentioned that replies sought under the Right to Information Act, 2005 had earlier confirmed that the entire river has been cleaned by the KHADC at a cost of Rs 1.35 crore.
