SHILLONG: In order to ensure hassle free entry of visitors to Shillong Peak, the East Khasi Hills district administration has deployed police personnel to frisk visitors who intend to visit the iconic tourist spot in the city.
The Defense authorities had restricted movement of civilians in Shillong Peak through the defence area after the Pathankot terror attack in January this year.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S. Dkhar on Tuesday informed that police will screen the visitors in the presence of IAF personnel.
When contacted, Defence PRO Amit Mahajan informed that the restriction on people visiting Shillong Peak had been lifted around 2-3 months back.
Meanwhile, the restriction on movement of civilians through the footpath from Anjalee Complex to Butcher Road is still on.
Commenting on this, Mahajan said the restriction on the stretch was imposed due to reports of criminal activities in the area. “Even Defense personnel are not allowed to use the particular stretch,” he said.
Different MLAs from the urban constituencies in the city had expressed their discontentment over the restriction of civilians besides raising the matter in the Assembly session earlier this year.
