SHILLONG: The agitating NGOs of Ri-Bhoi under the banner of Joint Action Committee (JAC) have unanimously decided to call-off their remaining agitational programmes in the district.

The decision to call-off the proposed night road blockade on October 19 and 20 and the proposed 12-hour shutdown on October 21, was taken by the JAC following the constitution of a committee to resolve the ongoing four-laning imbroglio in Umsning.

Speaking to media person after a meeting on Saturday, chairman of the JAC Donkupar Sumer said, “We have decided to call-off our agitational programmes since we are satisfied with the initiative taken by the State Government to constituting the committee.”

The committee constituted by the State Government will have representatives from the district administration, State Public Work Department (PWD) and four Dorbar Shnongs of Umsning as its members.

The JAC, however, demanded that all the Rangbah Shnongs of Umsning area should be included as members in the committee.

“We want the Government to include all the ten Rangbah Shnongs of Umsning in the committee in order to be absolutely sure about the desire of the people of the area with regards to the four-laning issue,” Sumer said.

The two JAC leaders — Eddie Kharnabi and David Kharnaior — were released after they furnishing personal surety bonds of Rs 25,000 each. (With inputs from UNI)
