Psychotherapeutic Professionals submit memo to Health Minister

SHILLONG: Members of the Trained Psychotherapeutic Professionals of Meghalaya (TPPM) met Health Minister Roshan Warjri on Tuesday apprising her of the need to employ trained counsellors in education, health and other sectors in the State.
In a memorandum submitted to the Minister, the association highlighted that depression and cases of suicide are on the rise in the state which is not prepared to tackle the situation.
“The government should take a serious note of the importance of counselling and mental health in the state,” it said adding that unless trained professionals are given the task of helping those in distress, the situation will not improve.
Speaking to reporters, coordinator of the association Roney Lyndem, said, “There has to be a proper definition of the word counsellor. The Minister understood the problem and assured us that she will look into the matter.”
