SHILLONG: Sreyoshi, a non-profit company, is in talks with the State government to introduce a new learning initiative titled Project CEBDAT (Children’s Early Brain Development and Transformation) in the schools in Meghalaya.
The course promises of improving students’ performance in mathematics, science and other subjects.
Addressing reporters here on Monday, Aniruddha Ghosh, member of Sreyoshi said, “The goal of CEBDAT is to empower the children in Meghalaya educationally and to help the children to scientifically develop and better utilise their brains, to improve visualisation and imagination, improve memory and concentration.”
He stated that CEBDAT is suitable for students starting from the tender age of 4+ to 14.  Highlighting Meghalaya’s education scenario, he said, “The NCERT survey on Meghalaya, 2009-2010, reveals that students’ performance in class III is significantly below the national level. Even in standard VIII, performance of students in reading, mathematics, science is well below the national average.”
Ghosh referred to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), which revealed that class IV students who can solve at least subtraction is 64.4 per cent and 74.2 per cent in government and private schools respectively (as per 2010 reports). And in 2014, the percentage dropped to 45.1 per cent and 54.9 per cent in government and private schools respectively.
“As per the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT), report carried on 2010 reason for very poor performance of students is the very weak foundation right from lower classes especially in rural areas. Again there is inherent weakness in subjects of English, mathematics and science,” he said. He observed that to improve the educational performance of the students in these subjects the brain needs to be scientifically developed. Sreyoshi is currently conducting classes at Rilbong. It has conducted teaching programmes throughout NE and Kolkata.
