SHILLONG: The State Security Commission is yet to decide whether the officiating DGP S.B Singh should be given full charge or the panel should opt for a new DGP.
The State is yet to get a full-fledged DGP after Rajiv Mehta retired last year.
Later, S.K Jain was appointed as acting DGP.  Following the retirement of Jain, Additional DGP (law and order) S. B Singh took over as the acting DGP on October 30 last year.
The State Security Commission, which selects the DGP, has not met for a long time.
An official with the Home Department said so far no date has been fixed for the State Security Committee to sit and select the new DGP.
It is yet to be known whether Singh will be appointed as the full-fledged DGP or the panel will select a new police chief.
The first meeting of the State Security Commission on August 31 last was chaired by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to discuss the selection of the new DGP.
In fact, the State did not have a full-fledged DGP for six months now since the retirement of Mehta. Though the State Government wanted to extend Mehta’s term but the request was turned down by the Centre. As per the seniority list, the five eligible IPS officers for the DGP’s post are Y.C Modi (1984 batch), P.S Purohit (1985 batch), R.P Agrawal (1986 batch), who are all on deputation to the Centre, Raghvendra Awasthi (1985 batch), who is the current DG (Civil Defence and Home Guards), and S.B Singh (1986 batch).
