Lapang’s initiative to end city’s water shortage

Mr D D Lapang, who took over the Municipal Administration portfolio following the recent reshuffle, took stock of the various problems facing the Shillong Municipality at a meeting of all the concerned official agencies here on July 7.

He asked the PHE Department and Shillong Municipality to explore all possible sources of water either through sinking tube wells or by harnessing streamlets for meeting the water scarcity in Shillong.

Mr Lapang informed that against the actual water requirement of 20 lakh gallons per day, only 9.49 lakh gallons were being supplied at present. He said pending the completion of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Schemes, the PHE Department and Shillong Municipality should make to interim arrangements augment the water supply.

As for the garbage clearance in Shillong, be stated that four new trucks were being purchased and that soon they should be on the road.

Stressing the urgent need to repair the Mawlonghat Cherra Bus Stand Mr Lapang directed to complete the work within four months. The D.C. and the S.P. would assist the PWD so that the work could progress unhindered.

Senior officials of the Public Works, Public Health Engineering, Health, Home, Municipal Administration department, MSEB and the Syiem of Mylliem attended the meeting.
