SHILLONG: “Meghalaya till date has recorded 593 HIV positive cases,” this was revealed by Project Director of Meghalaya Aids Control Society Dr. E Lyngshkor.

Addressing a consultative meeting organised on Monday by the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS) at Shillong Club , Dr E Lyngshkor asserted that facilities established by the government to detect and assist people with the virus are doing a good job.

It may be mentioned that the gathering which comprised of several NGOs, faith based organisations (FBOs) deliberated on the need to take more concrete steps to tackle AIDS.

It was however opined by all the stakeholders in the meeting that a lot more is needed to be done with regard to creating awareness on the vital subject of HIV and AIDS in the state.

“Meghalaya today is slotted in the ‘C category’ by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) signifying low prevalence status and it is MACS’ endeavour to maintain the status and even lower it,” added Dr. E Lyngshkor while addressing the gathering.

The additional secretary of health MR Synrem who chaired the meeting observed that the intention is to send across the message of the objective but this can only be achieved if all stakeholders come forward and positively participate in the process.

A part of the session was also accorded to media’s role in the campaign with special emphasis on sensitivity to be maintained in reportage of the issue especially in maintaining confidentiality of a person’s identity.

To this, David Laitphlang, president of the Shillong Press Club responded by apologizing for any lapse whatsoever by the fourth estate while stressing on better linkages between MACS and the press.

“Constant communication and updates are necessary to take your campaign forward and it is our endeavour to support you in whatever humble way we can,” Laitphlang said adding, “
