SHILLONG: The Transport Department is trying to convince the Centre to include Baljek Airport in the UDAN scheme.
Officials in the Transport Department told The Shillong Times on Thursday the State Government has to comply with certain criteria and guidelines for Baljek to be included in the scheme.
Meghalaya has asked the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to provide estimated cost for installing necessary infrastructure at Baljek Airport in Tura that has remained non-functional till date.
However, land for expansion of the runway has already been acquired.
The officials said services under UDAN will begin from Shillong Airport in July “as necessary infrastructure is in place”.
It will be connected with Agartala, Aizawl, Dimapur, Imphal and Silchar and Air Deccan has been selected as the first bidder.
When asked about the ongoing land acquisition hurdles, the officials said land acquisition is on and everything is in order except a few peripheral areas which are under litigation.
