SHILLONG: The intervention of the Prime Minister’s Office and State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has helped a teenager in city continue her studies.
The teenager, who was contemplating dropping out of school due to financial problems, has received Rs 25,000 from a city-based NGO.
The girl’s father abandoned her and her mother, who sells betel nut in the city. The mother had filed a court case for maintenance.
The teenager, whose name and age were not revealed by SCPCR, was a bright student but wanted to quit when she was in Class XII due to poverty.
Last year, she wrote to the PMO about her plight. The PMO wrote to SCPCR and the Commission took up the matter.
However, since the Commission did not have funds, the matter was taken up with a voluntary organisation called Shillong Round Table and it paid for her annual fees of Rs 25,000.
The girl completed her Class XII exams and now she is planning to pursue higher studies while the maintenance case is still going on. Her case has been published in SCPCR’s annual report 2015-16.
