2 students drowned

DHANBAD: Two second-year students of Indian School of Mines drowned on Sunday at the Bhatinda fall under Putki police station area, about 25 kms from the district headquarter. Police sources said the deceased identified as Nand Dayal (22) and Butru Bira Ashok(22) had gone to take bath at the falls, along with their friends, but lost their lives. Nand belonged to Hyderabad, while Ashok hailed from Vijaywada. Their bodies were fished out and sent for the postmortem, police said, adding that family members of the deceased were informed about the accident. (UNI)

2 people ran over by bus

CHAMARAJANAGAR (K’TAKA): Driver and Conductor were killed on the spot when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus ran over them in the bus depot here on Sunday. Police said driver Mohammed Ghouse (35) of Bidar and Conductor Somanna (50) of Nagarle village in Nanjangud taluk were standing in front of the depot gate when the bus, with starting trouble, was pushed by mechanics and got started immediately. Enraged over the incident, KSRTC employees staged a stir as higher authorities failed to visit the spot even after two hours of the incident. The flash stir of KSRTC bus drivers and conductors severely affected bus services in Chamarajanagar. The drivers and conductors also staged a road-blockade at Bhuvaneshwari Circle in the town for a while in protest against the apathy of KSRTC higher authorities. The Chamarajanagar Town Police registered a case. (UNI)

Rs 3.5 lakh looted at gun point

GHAZIABAD (UP): A cashier of a private company was robbed of Rs 3.5 lakh by two motorcycle-borne men near UP-Delhi border in Sahibabad area here, police said on Sunday. The incident took place near Aradhana cinema hall at around 8 PM when Omkar was going to deposit the amount at his office in the national capital, they said. The robbers fired shots in the air, snatched the bag containing the cash and fled from the spot, they said. In another incident, two farmers were robbed at gun point near Muradnagar on Saturday day after they withdrew Rs 87,000 from a bank in Suthari village. Kanwar Pal and Hari Kishan were returning to their house when they were stopped by the three robbers and looted, police said. (PTI)

Four killed in fire at godown

NEW DELHI: Four persons including two children were killed when a major fire broke out in a godown here on Sunday morning, Fire department official said. Saurabh (5), Rishabh Kumar (7), Mamta (28) and Sanjay Tiwari (35) have died in the incident, he said adding the cause of the fire has not been ascertained so far. The victims were trapped inside when the fire broke out at Rajdhani Transport godown on Asaf Ali Road near Ajmeri Gate here at around 9.45 AM, he said. It took firemen an hour to douse the blaze, the official said. (PTI)

Body fished out from Vaigai river

MADURAI (TN): The body of a 17-year-old student, who drowned in the Vaigai river while taking bath on Saturday evening was fished out, here. Police said the deceased, M Sundara Moorthy, studying in 12th standard in a government school at Silaiman locality, drowned in the Vaigai river. Despite search, his body was not located by the police on Saturday. Enraged over the delay in retrieving the body, his relatives staged a road roko agitation on Madurai-Rameswaram highway disrupting vehicular traffic for nearly two hours. However, on the intervention of senior police officials, the stir was later withdrawn. The personnel of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department fished out the body which had got entangled in bushes on Sunday afternoon. The district administration handed over Rs two lakh solatium from Chief Minister’s relief fund to the family of the deceased. (UNI)
