SHILLONG: The clampdown on use of tinted glasses or films in vehicles in the State will begin from the first week of December.
Confirming this N Ramachandran, DGP, Meghalaya, said that from December onwards, people will be prosecuted if they are caught with black/tinted glasses on their vehicles.
The city has a very large number of vehicles with black or tinted glasses or films, despite a ban on use of the same as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Decorating cars and motorbikes with different shades and designs is a common practice in the State.
However, the move to remove tinted glasses and films has earned austere reactions from the public here soon after it was announced earlier.
Some car owners said that there should be some concession for use of those tinted glasses which comes in lighter shades.
But the DGP had a different take on the issue, saying, “There is a law to remove such glasses or films from vehicles and there is no provision for lighter or any shades for that matter. Police has no part and for any concession it has to be ratified by the Parliament.”
The DGP further said that it is an enacted law and will be fully implemented irrespective of power and social status.
“It is a law and will be enforced,” he stressed.
It may be mentioned that in the past, there had been several attempts to implement the ban on tinted glasses or films but since there was no enforcement from police, the directives were not adhered to.
The police directive has come in the wake of reports that anti-social elements use vehicles with tinted glasses or films as cover to commit crimes or indulge in immoral acts even in public places.
