SHILLONG: The Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department has assured people of Mawlai that the water, which being pumped through the source at Umsohlang stream in Mawlai Mawdatbaki, is fit for drinking.

A day after the members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) found that impure water being supplied to various localities in Mawlai, Additional Chief Engineer, PHE Department SK Sun refuted the allegation saying “the water is supplied after treating it properly in its plant”.

During the inspection on Wednesday, a group of journalists along with the members of the HNYF found that the source is filthy, thanks to the various unhealthy activities going on in the surrounding areas near Umsohlang stream.

Sun blamed increase in population as the main reason behind such an occurrence saying “The population in Mawlai has increased from 33,000 in 2001 to 43,000 in 2011, so it has become difficult to meet to the increasing demand”.

While stating the pump at Umsohlang has become too old to carry the load, Sun said “There is a need to replace it.”

He further said the residents Mawlai area would get sufficient water once phase-III of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) becomes operational.
