NGO runs PHCs in Ri Bhoi without docs
NONGPOH: Several primary health centres and dispensaries in the rural pockets of Ri Bhoi district are running with qualified doctors and villagers have to seek help from private clinics. An NGO, Karuna Trust, is running PHCs in Umkiang, Mynriaw and Jirang without MBBS doctors and patients with even minor ailments are referred to private clinics.The NGO is not following the agreement that it signed with the State Government that at least one MBBS doctor should be deployed in each PHC.Instead, these health centres are being run by homoeopathic doctors. Also, the number of medical staff is also less.The sources also said that the Directorate of Health Service (DHS) is aware of the situation and so far no action has been taken against the NGO.Meanwhile, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) in western Ri Bhoi criticised the Health Department for not appointing doctors at Warmawsaw PHC.The group has urged the State Government for immediate deployment of doctor at the PHC.

Workshop on tribal and endangered languages of NE
SHILLONG: The workshop cum Intensive Training in Documentation and Description of Tribal and Endangered Languages of North-East India was organised by the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore and the Department of Khasi, NEHU on Monday. Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function, Prof. Henry Lamin, Pro Vice-Chancellor of NEHU expressed that he is happy to know that the CIIL, Mysore and the Department of Khasi have ventured to start this kind of workshop and training programme which is important for the languages of North East India. Prof. P.P. Giridhar, Former Deputy Director, CIIL, Mysore has stated “Every language in the universe has a right to exist, therefore every language even with a very few speakers need to be documented, preserved and promoted.” Prof. Suhnuram Sharma of the Deccan College has remarked that every language is unique in its own way. The Introduction to the workshop was given by Prof. Umarani Pappuswami, Deputy Director, CIIL, Mysore who stressed on the importance of giving intensive training to young linguists to document and describe tribal languages. The five-day workshop is attended by linguists and participants from Manipur University, Assam University, Tezpur University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indian Institute of Technology (Assam), the English and Foreign Language University (Shillong), Sikkim University, North-Eastern Hill university and Central Institute of Indian Languages (Mysore).

Police Public relationship meeting in NGH
Resubelpara: The Police Public Relationship meeting was organised on August 5 at Raja Apal Secondary School in North Garo Hills. The DSP HQ presided over the meeting, where the civil society leaders Nokma Sordars participated and expressed their views on maintaining law and order situations. The speakers shared new ideas and approaches to reach the militants into main stream as well to intervene the youths from joining militancy movement in the State. “The sons of the State are supposed to be remained at home as well as society rather going away from home,” one of the speakers said.Different activities including violin playing was displayed during the meeting, where more than a 1000 people thronged. In this meeting about 400 people stretched their hands to sign in members’ present sheet. The people of Raja A’pal have also donated the 400 bighas of land for Meghalaya Police. The Public Leaders and the police officials demarcated the land lay a sign Post in the allotted land. “Raja A’pal People are very generous so you will be blessed by almighty God in return”, said Willingbirth R Marak, president, District Development and Steering Committee, North Garo Hills Resubelpara.

GH Nokmas ask Council to abolish ‘Non-Hill’ Mauza
SHILLONG: The traditional heads and others residing at Danakgre Aking have asked the GHADC CEM Boston Marak to abolish ‘Non-Hill’ Mauza from the A-king. In a letter to the CEM, Nokma, Enilla Ch Marak said that there is a need to abolish Non Hill Mauzas from Danakgre A-king immediately and retain only “Hill Mauzas” in Garo Hills as it violates the identity and autonomy of the “Hill Council”
