SHILLONG: The South West Khasi Hills unit of KSU has threatened to protest if Chief Minister Mukul Sangma inaugurates the administrative unit in South West Khasi Hills on August 10.
The union instead insisted that the state government upgrade the Ranikor C&RD Block to a civil subdivision and create a new C&RD Block for the Wahkaji-Umdohlun area of South West Khasi Hills district.
Addressing reporters on Monday, Forwardman Nongrem, the president of KSU (SWKHD) said, “We will protest if the chief minister inaugurates the administrative unit. We need a civil subdivision and not an administrative unit.”
Nongrem said the union had time and again called for upgrade of the block to a civil sub-division but its requests had fallen on deaf ears. “We are not satisfied with the inauguration of an administrative unit. The state government has not turned its attention to the district,” the union president said.
Asserting that Mawpat block was inaugurated without any demand, he said, “It is better for him (Sangma) to inaugurate the civil sub-division and not an administrative unit.”
In a memorandum to the chief minister, the union had pointed out that the Ranikor C&RD Block covers 157 villages across 760 sq km with a population of over 41, 218.
The union said the state government should consider creation of a separate C &RD Block for the Wahkaji-Umdohlun area, which comprises more than 50 villages.
