JOWAI: A joint delegation of All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation (AJYWO) and Jaintia Hills Students’ Union (JSU) on Thursday met the Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner on illegal disposal of fly ash along the National highway.

Fly ash meant for cement plants in Jaintia Hill are being disposed of illegally by truckers on roadside right from Riat-turiem till Hynniawmer. Both the NGOs urged the Deputy Commissioner to take stern action against the guilty truckers.

According to AJYWO president, the illegal dumping of fly ash along the roadside would lead to environmental pollution.

“We have requested the Deputy Commissioner to look into the matter seriously and if he fails to do so, we would take our own course of action,” leaders of AJYWO and JSU said.”Jaintia Hills is not a dustbin and such disposal of fly ash will not be allowed and we want the administration to take stern action,” they added.

It may be mentioned that most of overloaded trucks carrying fly-ashes to cement plants dispose of some of their load to avoid penalty at the weighbridge run by the Transport Department at Hynniawmer.
