SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has observed that regular monitoring by the Directorate of Health Services and stern action against defaulting hospitals and erring staff over anomalies in issuance of birth/death certificate is necessary.
The court on Friday observed that after several orders in this matter, the Directorate of Health Services has taken up the process of streamlining the registration of birth and death.
However, the court said regular monitoring on the part of the directorate and stern action against the defaulting hospital/s and erring person/s is necessary.
“Having regard to the circumstances, we defer consideration of this matter further while expecting the Directorate to continue with its monitoring in an appropriate manner and to file a fresh affidavit specifying the steps taken,” it said.
The matter has been listed after eight weeks.
A law student Aneeta Synrem of Polo Hills had filed a PIL seeking the intervention of the High Court following the findings of RTI query which revealed that as many as 58,716 birth certificates and 2115 death certificates were issued from January 1, 2010, to September 22, 2015, by different registrars of births and deaths under East Khasi Hills on the basis of court order.
