TURA: Roads in and around South Garo Hills are famous for its deplorable condition partly due to negligence and partly due to use of sub standard materials for construction. To this effect the Central Executive Committee (CEC), Garo Students Union (GSU) based on an enquiry conducted by the Union on Tuesday last stopped the ongoing road construction from Baromile in West Garo Hills to Chokpot in South Garo Hills.

The vice president, CEC, GSU, Tura, Robert Ch Momin in a communiqué stated that upon enquiry the Union allegedly found out that contractors in cohort with concerned department officials were not maintaining quality of work. The Union alleged that in a bid to pocket money the contractors were using sub standard materials for construction of roads subsequently affecting the durability of the roads which is only a few months.

Stressing on the fact that Chokpot and its adjoining areas generate huge income for the State through export of coal and limestone, the GSU has come down heavily on the Government for allegedly neglecting the area’s road connectivity.

Even though the Government had sanctioned money for the construction of durable roads in the region the shoddy work being done in fulfilling it has dashed the aspirations and expectations of the people of South Garo Hills in general and Chokpot in Particular stated the Union.
