TURA: Residents of Rongkhon Songgital in Tura which falls under Rangsakona Assembly Constituency have threatened to move court over the Tura Municipal Board (TMB)’s negligence to clear garbage spilling over from its dumping ground to the Christian Cemetery located below despite repeated demands and complaints being served.

According to residents, garbage from the dumping ground has covered many graves and tombstones located near the boundary of the cemetery and the TMB so far, has done nothing to rectify the problem.

Earlier, on several occasions, letters were submitted by the locality’s development committee to the board’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) requesting the official to follow the guidelines of the Environment Pollution Act of 1986 and Prevention and Control of Pollution Act of 1981.

Copies of the letters were also submitted to the Tura MP, Rangsakona MLA and the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner.

In July 28 this year, the West Garo Hills District Administration issued an order where assurance was given that the matter would be taken up and the overflowing garbage cleared. However, despite the assurance being given, the situation remains the same and garbage still covers the site.

The residents, following an emergent meeting held on October 8 submitted another letter to the board’s CEO on October 10 serving an ultimatum to clear the garbage within three days’ time.

If the TMB fails to act within the given deadline, the residents have asserted that they would move court to settle the matter once and for all.
