SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Friday laid the foundation stone for the first state-sponsored university in Tura and the North East’s first college of architecture and urban planning at Jewilgre in South West Garo Hills.
The government has already sanctioned Rs 19 crore for Captain Williamson Sangma State Technical University, which will be spread over 100 acres. A bill to set up the university was passed in the Assembly in 2011.
“The construction of the university has already begun and efforts are being made to ensure that it is completed soon,” said Sangma, who was accompanied by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma.
The chief minister said Rs 26 crore has been sanctioned for initial infrastructure development of College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
“Urban planning is a lucrative profession… We invite all our educated people working outside the region to come back with their experience and join our universities and institutes and contribute to the welfare of the state,” he added.
