Dance troupe represents state in Dimapur
SHILLONG: Fifteen dancers from the state took part in the cultural programme ‘Lariti’ by showcasing the traditional dance titled Ka Shad Shoh Kba (Harvest Dance), which was organised by the North East Cultural Centre, Dimapur, on November 22-25 in Arunachal Pradesh. The dance troupe was led by Silbi Passah who taught traditional the Khasi dances. The programme is part of the Discover North East – Yatra/Chain Programme held from November 22-25 held at Miao Songking Kharsang and Bordumsa, Changlang District of Arunachal Pradesh.

Aadhaar counter for senior citizens
TURA: The Senior Citizens and Pensioners’ Association of Tura has urged West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner to set up a special Aadhaar enrolment counter for the elderly. The association recently met the official and submitted an application in this regard.

Foundation laid for Lumparing road
SHILLONG: The monitoring cum implementation committee (MCIC) in collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong of Upper and Lower Lumparing along with the Lumparing Welfare Society organised the foundation stone laying ceremony for the PWD road from Bhutia Mandir via Lumparing Vidyapith School to Lumparing Nepali L.P School, Mynsain, on Monday. The project was sanctioned under the PWD development scheme 2017 for over Rs 1 lakh. HB Wahlang, headman of Upper Lumparing, lauded the efforts of MLA Sanbor Shullai stating that the motorable road will be a great blessing to the residents of the area. Shullai thanked those who contributed their land to make the road and requested members of MCIC and the Dorbar Shnong to monitor the project in collaboration with PWD officials.

Drawing competition held
Nongpoh: The Bosco Integrated Development Society (BIDS) in collaboration with the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Supply) of Ri Bhoi District on Monday organised a drawing and poster competition for school students from Nongpoh as part of the National Consumer Rights Day which will be held on December 19. The competition was held under the theme ‘Building a Digital World Consumer Can Trust’ at the Community Hall of Nongpoh, Sajer. Students from Alpha English Higher Secondary School, St. Paul Higher Secondary School, Morning Star Higher Secondary School and Ri Bhoi College took part in the competition and the winners will be announce during the National Consumer Rights Day celebration on January 19 which will held at Umden Khasi in Ri Bhoi District.

Tourism push for ex-rebels
TURA: The Tourism Department and the East Garo Hills district administration are working hand in hand to provide livelihood to former rebels. Addressing a gathering at an orientation programme on career guidance in tourism at Williamnagar Circuit House on Monday, Deputy Commissioner Ram Kumar said surrendered militants can opt for jobs in the tourism sector. He also stressed the need for promoting eco-tourism that will open up more job opportunities. Kumar urged the youths living in forests and wielding firearms to surrender and join the mainstream. The district tourist office, Bulbully S Marak, presented ‘Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, Garo Hills as Tourist Destination’ and ‘Tourism for Livelihood Improvement’.

Mild tremor
SHILLONG: A slight intensity earthquake shook parts of Meghalaya on Monday around 9 am. The epicenter of the tremor, measuring 4.7 on the Richter Scale, was in East Garo Hills. However, there are no reports of damage.

23 kg ganja seized
SHILLONG: In a perfect example of citizens and police joining hands to curb crime, Seng Longkmie Khanapara and Ri Bhoi police on Monday seized 23 kg of ganja from the house of one person from Marwet, Khanapara. Ri Bhoi SP, R Singh informed that 23 kg of ganja was seized from the house of Kabita Devi of Themmarwet Khanapara by officer-in-charge of Khanapara and the staff.

Peddler caught
SHILLONG: On December 9 around 1 pm, volunteers of the Khasi Jaintia Fish Wholesalers and Retailers’ Association, caught one drug peddler Willborn Lyngdoh (20) from a public toilet at Iewduh fish market in Shillong. They recovered 0.72 grams of suspected heroin from his possession. Police arrested the accused.

Missing person
SHILLONG: Therisia Diengdoh of Nongsder, Umiam lodged a complaint that on December 5 about 10 am, her son Daniel Diengdoh (22), left home and did not return till date.
