TURA: The Mindikgre Regional Unit of the GSU in South Garo Hills has raised the issue of trucks carrying coal exceeding the NGT limit of 9 matric tones, plying regularly on NH-62 from Nongalbibra via Baghmara to Gasuapara of the same district.

In its complaint to the Director of Minerals and Mining in Tura, the unit said that the guidelines of the NGT are being carried out in letter but not in spirit. It said that due to the overloading of coal trucks the entire stretch of NH-62 was in a deplorable state which is disrupting the smooth movement of vehicles.

“Thanks to this trucks the entire stretch from Siju Rongdong to Gasuapara is riddled with potholes and making travel unbearable for other vehicles,” it said.

Apart from carrying over the permitted limit, the unit alleged that some trucks are even illegally transporting coal without P forms or Royalty Challans which is necessary as per the rules and guidelines of the Minerals and Mining and the NGT.

Reminding the SC ruling of November 2005 that ‘compounding of the offence of overloading does not amount to authorizing continuance of the offence and the vehicle cannot be permitted to carry the excess load’, the unit urged the official concerned to check the anomalies and take action against offenders accordingly.
