TURA: Ancient history tells us that Cleopatra once ruled the land of the pharaohs, recent history has the likes of Jayalalitha, Mayawati and Mamata before us; if these women could, says a defiant kalpana, why can’t she?

Taking a dig at her detractors who she claims seek to underestimate the power of a woman, the widow of Clifford Marak, former MLA of Chokpot, Kalpana D Sangma of the Garo National Council vows to prove all her critics wrong and let any apprehensions regarding her ability to rest.

“My opponents say I am a woman but they forget history which mentions how women have been successful leaders. Look at the state of West Bengal where a woman is heading the state. Even Tamil Nadu had a successful woman chief minister for many years.  If elected I will transform Chokpot because its people have been betrayed by those previously elected,” claims  Kalpana Sangma in a public rally at Chokpot playground on Thursday.

The party’s heavyweights led by GHADC Chief Executive Member Boston Marak and Deputy CEM Wenison Ch Marak were there to shore up support for Kalpana’s candidature in Chokpot.

“People are disillusioned with the other parties for their failed promises which is why more and more people are returning to the party of their forefathers- the GNC,” boasted senior party leader Heringstone R Marak to the crowds who had gathered at the rally.

Interestingly, while Kalpana Sangma is the head of the GNC party the deputy CEM in GHADC, Wenison Marak, made a tall promise in his speech when he said that Boston would lead the Garo people in the near future.

“The only way we can take Garo Hills forward is to strengthen the GNC which can be done by electing its candidates in the six constituencies of Garo Hills. Our representatives shall fight for Garoland in the assembly,” a confident Boston Marak stated at the rally.
