SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has put up 47 candidates for the first time in Meghalaya for the Assembly polls is confident that it will secure at least 10-15 seats.

Speaking to media persons after filing nominations, BJP Candidate from Pynthorumkhrah, A L Hek claimed that the BJP was going to lead the next Government in the state.

Hek, however, played safe on the issue of the Chief Minister’s post saying the matter would be decided by the party and they would accept the decision.

BJP’s Meghalaya in charge and National Spokesperson, Nalin Kohli who marched along with Hek from Pynthorumkhrah constituency till DC office for filing of nominations   asserted that the response for BJP had been phenomenal and change in Meghalaya was very clear with leaders like AL Hek, Sanbor Shullai, JA Lyngdoh and others contesting polls in the BJP ticket this time.

Accusing the Congress of running away from its track record of performance in the state, Kohli defended the decision of the party to put up only 47 candidates saying BJP does not put candidates for tokenism and they are putting those candidates who can give credible fight in the elections.

Maintaining that the results in Meghalaya will be surprising, he added that the party would do well in Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, Garo Hills and even in Shillong.

When asked how the party will deal with the tag of “communal party’ attached to it, Kohli said that   BJP’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi swore only by the Constitution of India which makes all the citizens of the country equal

“We want to implement the Constitution in letter and spirit,” he said.

Earlier, Hek along with a large number of his supporters marched to the DC office from his constituency to file his nominations.
