UBI suspends branch manager

 SHILLONG: The authorities of United Bank of India (UBI) have suspended Dambarudhar Deka, former branch Manager of Mawlai Nonglum branch, who was arrested on December 8 while accepting bribe.

Confirming this, a source from the UBI Main Branch here said that Deka, who hails from Nagaon district of Assam, was suspended following his arrest and imprisonment.

It maybe mentioned that Deka demanded bribe from one Michael Bareh, who went to the branch seeking loan under Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP). He was arrested under Prevention of Corruption Act. Deka has initially demanded a sum of Rs10,000 for processing the loan application of Bareh. But after negotiation the amount came down to Rs 5,000. Bareh later lodged a complaint with Mawlai PS. After paying Rs 3000 to the bank manager he was asked to pay the remaining amount of the amount of Rs 2 000 by December 13.

Meanwhile, a police source said that the accused had moved court seeking bail recently. On Thursday the court sought the case diary.

“Whether he secured bail or not I have no information. He was released from Civil Hospital, Shillong on December 17 and is presently in judicial custody,” said a police officer.
