SHILLONG: The new coalition government has a mammoth task ahead as it has to address several contentious issues.
One of the major issues that the government has to address is influx of illegal immigrants into the state, besides speeding up the process of setting up entry and exit points.
The government has to face the NGOs who are still demanding the implementation of Inner Line Permit.
In addition, the burning issue of railways will be another challenge for the new government as the NGOs want an effective mechanism to check influx before they give their nod to the railway projects in the state.
It may be mentioned that most of the political parties in the coalition government had promised an effective solution to the issue of influx and illegal immigration
Apart from immigration, the decades-long boundary dispute with Assam is also a major issue in the state.
As time and again reports of Assam encroaching into Meghalaya keep coming, the new government will have to give its best to address the burning issue that had been raised on the political platform time and again. The regional parties which were in opposition had always attacked the state government on the poor fiscal deficit of the state and now only time will tell if the new government be able to overcome the shortage of resources.
The BJP, which is an ally in the government, had attacked the Congress-led government over the growing traffic jam in Shillong city, besides the infrastructural gaps. It is to be seen how the new government addresses the issues.
In the run-up to the election, most of the candidates had given their assurance to provide safe and sufficient drinking water to the people and now the new government has to work towards providing better quality drinking water.
