SHILLONG: The state government, which is concerned over dearth of doctors, will soon hold a meeting with the director of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
Health Minister AL Hek told reporters on Tuesday that the government will ask NEIGRIHMS to provide better facilities to people.
Speaking about the cancer wing at Civil Hospital, Hek said, “The equipment has not been installed as it is a highly technical job that demands a great deal of expertise, especially in terms of human resources which have delayed the project.”
The minister informed that 95 per cent of the construction of civil works was completed. “Hence, the installation of equipment has to be done to complete the 5 per cent work. This is as per the report of the Health Engineering wing,” he added.
Also, there is a need for manpower because “the cancer wing developed by the government is only for OPD”.
“We don’t have cancer hospitals but Civil Hospital still treats cancer patients. Once the cancer wing is complete, the service will be extended to the in-patients at Civil Hospital,” he said.
Former chief minister Mukul Sangma had laid the foundation stone for the cancer wing in March 2011. The time for completion was two years.
After electrification, the next process should be inspection by a team from the Department of Atomic Energy, which is funding the Rs 26-crore project, to ensure that the equipment are safely installed. However, the process has been delayed.
