SHILLONG: One GNLA cadre, Sonaram R Sangma alias Chonkam, working with the 2nd in Command GNLA Western Range, Rahul Marak, surrendered before South Garo Hills Superintendent of Police MKSingh on Saturday.
Chonkam is from Darangdura in Nongalbibra. He received his training in Durama forest. Interestingly at first Chonkam surrendered only with one hand grenade but GNLA Western Range area commander Jack Marak informed that Chonkam was 3rd in command under him after Rahul Marak and he had deserted camp with one AK-47, one 9mm pistol, 250 bullets, 3 magazines, one hand grenade and cash worth Rs 5 lakh. Marak also informed that Chonkam had surrendered because he was extorting money without their consent and during Christmas and New year he was found drinking, which is against GNLA rules.
Based on Marak’s statement the SP confronted Chonkam who finally confessed that he had left the arms in the jungle. At the time of filing of the report, a police team had left for the area to recover the arms.
