SHILLONG: The condition of major national highways in the state has improved significantly over the years yet there are many roads which need to be brought up to the national highway standard.
The PWD (NH) department is concerned over the fact that some roads in Garo Hills are not up to the national highway mark and efforts are being made to construct important roads in Garo Hills as per the National Highway standard.
An official said that the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) would soon take up the Damra-Baghmara-Dalu road and the department is preparing the feasibility report. A meeting on the project was also held with the chief minister on Friday.
“In addition, the department is also keen on starting construction work for the Shillong-Dawki road at the earliest and the tender for the project will be floated within three months.”
“Some issues pertaining to alignment in the forest area and army establishments cropped up but the matter is more or less resolved and the department was informed that the land for the project will be made available,” the official said. “The social impact assessment for the project will begin on Monday,” he added.
When asked about the national highway which passes through the heart of the city, the official replied by saying that the overlay work has been completed even though it had been slowed down due to rain.
“Once the roads are completed, we will put up the necessary road markings,” he said.
