SC lawyer calls for new pact on Punjabi Lane

SHILLONG: Supreme Court lawyer Daniel Stone Nonglait said a new agreement, new law and new order should be implemented prior to the shifting of residents of Sweepers’ Colony.
Addressing reporters on Friday, he said a new agreement should be drafted between the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, the office of Hima Mylliem, Shillong Municipal Board and the Dalit Sikhs (Harijan).
According to him, there has to be a new drawing/scale map of the area.
He also spoke on the need to maintain peace and security in the areas surrounding the colony.
Nonglait further observed that Article 14 of the Constitution which states that ‘The State shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India’; Article 15 which calls for ‘Prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth and Article 19 (1) (d) that permits citizens to move freely throughout the territory of India to reside and (e) settle in any part of the territory of India, should be adhered to.
