One held for inflammatory social media posts

SHILLONG: Police arrested a person on Wednesday for posting malicious messages and in addition, registered nine cases in connection with cyber crime.
According to police, the person identified as Manbhalang Nongspung was arrested for posting inflammatory materials on social media platform.
Police said a case under section 153/153(A)/506/505/507 IPC was registered in Cyber Crime Police Station and the person has been remanded in judicial custody.
Many others have been summoned for questioning in the nine cases registered and due legal action will be taken against those who have infringed upon the laws of the land, police said.
In a statement on Wednesday, the police said that its cyber crime wing is actively monitoring the posts on social media which are offensive, inflammatory and derogatory in nature.
“Such kinds of posts are liable to legal action as per provisions of The Information Technology Act, 2000 / The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 and Indian Penal Code. Cases are registered against such postings. The nine cases registered in Cyber Crime Police Station are under investigation”, the statement said.
Police also appealed to all citizens not to post any offensive and inflammatory materials on social media as legal action will be taken against such postings.
“Administrators of social media groups are to ensure that no offensive materials are posted by members of the group as these are liable to legal action. The administrators are also requested to inform police and Cyber Crime Wing if any such materials are posted on their group”, the statement added.
