GUWAHATI:  As the Vice Chancellor of Manipur University has declined to quit  as demanded by Manipur University Students Union (MUSU),  it will now launch  a statewide agitation demanding the ouster of Professor Adya Prasad Pandey, the Vice Chancellor of Manipur University which has been rendered non-functional by the students’ agitation since May 30 last.

The agitation demanding the removal of the VC which led to the non-functioning of the university has been joined by the Manipur University Teachers Association and (MUTA) Manipur University Staffs Association (MUSA).

The students union, teachers and the staffs association staged a sit in protest in front of the university gate on Tuesday afternoon demanding that the VC of the university to resign from at the earliest. Members of the teachers association said that both the associations (including staff association) would not back off and the agitation would continue until and unless the VC resigned from his post.

The members also expressed their shock on the VC’s decision not to come to the university after repeated request by teachers to find an amicable solution to the crisis. The students’ body and both the association have also demanded the appointment of a new VC within this month and ensure proper examination schedule for the university as well.

The VC, Professor Adya Prasad Pandey had promised to resolve the issue soon when he clarified on the allegations leveled  against him in front of the media few days ago. However, there was no report of the VC requesting or sending an invitation to the students or the associations for talks.

The students’ agitation has caught attention and elicited support  of the he locals residing near and around the university. Thousand of locals took out a candle light march on Tuesday evening in support of the agitation.. The students union when contacted told that they would launch more intense agitation statewide. The students seem to be in no mood for talks with the VC, rather they want to talk to a higher authority like the HRD Minister.
