3 die in Assam floods; toll rises to 28

GUWAHATI: Three persons were reported dead on Wednesday as seven districts remain affected by the first wave of floods in Assam with the Jia Bhoroli in central Assam’s Sonitpur district flowing above danger level.

One person died in Charaideo district in Upper Assam while a death each was reported from Cachar and Karimganj districts in Barak Valley, taking the toll to 28 so far.

The flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority here said several areas in seven districts – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Charaideo, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj – lie submerged by the deluge.

As on Wednesday, 68,274 people in 144 villages remain affected by the floods. Upper Assam and central Assam districts have been affected because of heavy rainfall in the area and parts of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.

There is heavy rain in the offing though with the Met office however predicting heavy to very heavy showers at isolated places of the Northeast from Thursday to Sunday.

Nevertheless, the number of affected people has come down over the past week, which reflects an improvement of the situation in the so far worst-hit Barak Valley.

The crop area affected by floodwaters in four districts has come down to 457 hectares, the bulletin informed.

At present, 53 relief camps/relief distribution centres are operational in six districts.
