SHILLONG: South Tura legislator, Agatha Sangma tendered her resignation from the Meghalaya Assembly on Monday to pave way for her brother, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to contest from the seat.
Conrad Sangma, who is yet to be elected to a constituency, has to contest the by-poll and get elected as an MLA to continue as the chief minister of the state.
Agatha submitted her resignation to Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira.
Later, Agatha said that she had vacated the seat since there was limited time before her brother could contest the election to South Tura, which according to her is the most practical seat for him.
Asked about her future plans, she said she would continue to serve the people of Garo Hills and Meghalaya in whatever capacity she could, adding that she was making sure that the MDA government completed its full term and that it was not necessary for her to be an elected member.
Agatha said that since she was the chairperson of the Board of Climate Change and Sustainable Development, she would try to make it an effective body.
She further said that the upcoming South Tura by-poll would be a smooth election for her brother Conrad and there was nothing to worry for the chief minister.
“The people of South Tura will be excited to have the chief minister as their MLA. Then again, with the constituency being the headquarters of Garo Hills, Conrad could bring effective change through development work,” Agatha said.
