SHILLONG: Apathy of the state government towards the Khasi freedom fighters has disappointed Urban Affairs Minister Hamlet Dohling as he raised questions as to “why aren’t there any government-built monuments or statues of these leaders in the state”.
Speaking at the 183rd death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, Dohling said, “It upsets me that till date the state government has not erected monuments or statues of Khasi freedom fighters as a tribute to them even after 40 years of statehood.”
The minister, who was attending a programme to commemorate Tirot Sing’s death anniversary at Madan Iew Rynghep, Fire Brigade on Tuesday, promised to raise the matter in the Cabinet. “The state government should not only be glad that it has given a holiday. But it should show that the state had freedom fighters who fought for freedom,” he said.
Meanwhile, UDP leader, Paul Lyngdoh said the Khasi community should take the example of Croatia, the lowest ranked team that reached the recently concluded FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
“The Khasi community should be courageous and strength does not depend on the number of people present but it is the spirit of courage,” Lyngdoh said.
