SHILLONG: The Executive Committee of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council has decided to write to the state government demanding 1951 as the cut-off year for citizenship in the state and not 1971 as proposed by many pressure groups.
Addressing reporters on Monday, KHADC chief executive member HS Shylla expressed his opposition to the demand for extending the Assam Accord in the state.
“The cut-off year as per the Assam Accord is 1971. The Executive Committee has decided to write to the state government that the cut-off year be made 1951 and not 1971,” he said.
The chairman of the Grand Council of Chiefs, John Kharshiing, had sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend the application of memorandum of Settlement – Assam Accord of August 15, 1985, to Meghalaya as this would ensure implementation of National Register of Citizens.
Shylla reiterated on Monday that the Grand Council of Chiefs was an illegal body.
“We have issued an executive order to constitute the Council of Traditional Chief in which all chiefs and traditional heads will be part of the council,” he said.
