SHILLONG: The secretary of Hima Nongspung, Michael Warjri, has alleged encroachment of Meghalaya’s land by neighboring state of Assam in the name of construction of roads and bridge.

Pointing to the road construction, he termed that the construction work of carried out by MLA West Guwahati, Ramendra Narayan Kalita  was illegal as the state of Meghalaya did not grant him permission to do so.

He told reporters on Saturday that Kalita applied for permission to construct Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) roads in Assam-Meghalaya Inter-state border at Mawdongki and Jimbrigaon, Bakhlapara on October 18, 2017.

Warjri added that it was resolved in a meeting held on November 11, 2009 in Byrnihat, that the government of Assam could not proceed with any development schemes ‘inside’ Meghalaya without permission from the Deputy Commissioner, Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi Distict.

On the other hand, Warjri again wrote to the Deputy Commissioner, Ri-Bhoi District complaining of the illegal construction of Ranibari Bridge urging the DC to immediately stop the construction work.

In the letter, he said that the construction of the bridge and the encroachment by the Assam government started on August 11, 2018 and the work was going on in full swing.

Again, Warjri complained to the Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi district on the illegal permission granted by Pranab Rangsa of Ranibari village  for the construction of bridge at Ranibari.
