SHILLONG: Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council (KHADC) chief executive member HS Shylla said on Monday the council “will not recognise third gender in the KHAD (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (First and Second Amendment) Bills”.
The Centre has recognised the third gender in 2014 and when asked about the inclusion of the gender, the CEM said, “We don’t recognise them (the third gender), we only recognise male and female.”
The consultative committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday after the state government returned the amendment bills.
“The government has returned the bills and we thanked the government for not delaying it. The consultative committee will not take much time,” he said, adding that the bill for clans will also be prepared.
According to Shylla, the consultative committee will sit for 3-4 times to complete the work as he said the committee will only rectify certain sections in the bill.
