SHILLONG: Music lovers in the state who want to make a career in the field of music will get a major boost as the State Government has decided to establish the institute of music at the interim space in the upcoming building of Captain Williamson Sangma museum located at the State Central Library.

Talking to media persons here on Thursday after the inspection of the building, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma asserted that the institute of music would be established from this academic session.

“We have decided to establish the institute keeping in view the potentialities of our youths in the field of music and other extra curricular activities,” Dr Sangma told reporters.Though initially the institute will function from the interim space in the museum, the permanent site for the institute in Mawdiangdiang has already been allotted to the department.

According to Dr Sangma, the land allotted for the institute at Mawdiangdiang is around 5 acres and earlier exercise by the Arts and Culture department has indicated that an amount of around Rs 40 crore is required for the project.

“We would like to invest on phase wise manner for the institute,” Dr Mukul Sangma added.

Earlier the State Government had urged the Central Government to set up a world class International University of Music in the state. However, the 100 crore proposal was rejected by the Central Government on the ground that the state of Meghalaya already has  a central university, NEHU.

“Boys and girls of our state should explore the opportunity and the institute is being established as we want that every music teacher in the country should be from Meghalaya,” Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said. The demand for the music academy cropped up in the state after the Shillong Chamber Choir managed to win a reality TV show   India’s Got Talent Khoj 2 which gave a boost to the budding music talents of the state. The proposed music academy is expected to give a boon the interested music lovers who are willing to learn different types of music and further polish their talents in the field of music.
