NONGSTOIN: The KHADC chief executive member, HS Shylla, found loopholes in the running of two major companies in West Khasi Hills during an inspection on Wednesday.
Shylla, while appreciating the companies for creating employment in the region, suggested corrective measures to the management.
He first visited Shri Shakhambari Ferro Alloys Pvt Ltd at Riwiang. While addressing the media, Shylla asked the manager to apply for labour licence and work permit from the KHADC because the KHADC chief found many labourers from outside the state working without licences as reported by HYC.
Shylla also said the ferro-alloy factory should go for police verification of workers and get certificates for them from the Health Department to prevent HIV/AIDS.
On the company flouting company rules and regulations, Shylla said “it has nothing to do with the council” as he was not an expert to know the rules.
Shylla received complaints about workers in the factory getting eye infection and headache and said he would write to the director of the Health Department in this regard.
The KHADC chief, who was accompanied by the BDO of Mawthadraishan, however, appreciated the factory’s role in creating opportunities for every household.
Later in the day, Shylla visited BSC C&C JV at Kynshi. He said the company started the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road project in 2011 but did not apply for work permit from the council. He added that he would enquire about it from the Labour Department.
Shylla claimed that there was negligence from the department because as per the report he found that there were 4,000 labourers but no one applied for valid documents from the council.
