SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma allayed fears of uranium mining on Tuesday and said the new alignment of the Nongstoin-Domiasiat-Mawthabah road project has cut off the area from the sites of uranium deposits.
The statement comes at a time when there were apprehensions that the Union Government would sanction Nongstoin-Domiasiat-Mawthabah road to facilitate uranium mining.
Reacting to a query, Sangma informed that there were apprehensions among the public and NGOs regarding the project and hence the government held meeting with NHIDCL. “Now we are just waiting for the NOC from the District Council,” Sangma said.
On the other hand, the MD of the NHIDCL also said that construction on the project would begin as soon NOC and land is received from the authorities concerned.
Earlier, the KSU had opposed the Centre’s decision to go for the two-lane road project connecting the villages of the district which have a large deposit of uranium. The Centre had sanctioned the project at a cost of Rs 47 crore.
