SHILLONG: A one-day training cum workshop on ‘Gold fish- an ornamental fish for entrepreneurship development’ was organised by the Division of Fisheries, ICAR-RC-NEH Region, Umiam, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries on Friday.
Thirty farmer-entrepreneurs representing 11 districts participated in the programme that was attended by IR Sangma, Secretary of Fisheries Department as chief guest.
) In the inaugural session, SK Das, Principal Scientist and Head, Division of Fisheries, ICAR welcomed the delegates and highlighted the objectives of the workshop and motivated the participants to take up gold fish breeding and culture as a small-scale enterprise for livelihood as it has a ready domestic market.
A short film, Live Jewels, made by Das was screened for creating awareness on the ornamental fish sector. Leaflets were also distributed.
Dr G Kadirvel, Principal Investigator of the Agri-Business Incubation project of ICAR, spoke on entrepreneurship development and market linkage.
AL Mawlong, director of Fisheries, highlighted the role of the department of fisheries in development of ornamental sector and urged for technical collaborations with ICAR.
IR Sangma, Secretary, Fisheries, emphasised on the sector for employment generation among the youth so as to increase the socio-economic condition of farmers.
Dr N Prakash, Director, ICAR-RC-NEH Region, spoke on the various technologies developed by ICAR, which can be made available to the state government as and when required. He also encouraged the participants to take up ornamental fish culture for economic benefit.
