Shillong: The Opposition NCP has slammed the State Government on its assertion that the door for talks with Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) is shut.

Talking to The Shillong Times here on Wednesday, Leader of the Opposition and NCP legislator, Conrad Sangma, stated that the State Government should not shut any option that might help in restoration of peace in the State.

Reacting strongly to Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh’s statement that the government had no intention to hold talks with the banned Garo outfit, Sangma said the State Government cannot hope to foster peace with this kind of attitude.

Sangma also said that the aggression on the part of the Government shows that the terrorist tag to the GNLA was just a formality.

“I don’t think the Government will achieve anything by branding them as terrorists,” the Opposition leader added.

Sangma also criticized the Government for not fully supporting the anti-GNLA operation in terms of manpower and financial support, while adding, “The Government is only applying a half-hearted approach.”
