TURA: The District executive Force (DEF) of the North Garo Hills Police organized a ‘Martyrs Commemoration Marathon Run’ at Resubelpara on Thursday, to commemorate civilian martyrs as well as those from the police department, who were killed in the hands of militants during the last few years.
The event was mostly aimed at paying respect to police and other security personnel who laid down their lives in their fight against militants to bring peace to the district and to the state of Meghalaya in general.
The run began from Dekachang Playground and continued through the main thoroughfares of Resubelpara Town and culminated back at the starting venue.
“I pay my homage to those heroes and martyrs who laid down their lives in their fight to successfully overcome terrorists in Garo Hills. It is in their memory and to pay respect to them that the event is being organized,” North Garo Hills SP, Dr Sacheng R Marak said.
A member of a local Peace Committee said that it was befitting that such an event has been organized in memory of the fallen martyrs. He said that the same would also strengthen ties between police and the public and the future.
“Many crores of rupees have been spent by the Meghalaya Police and the Home Department during the operations, surrender ceremonies and rehabilitation purposes. Finally, with the combined efforts of police and the public, we have been able to achieve our goal, which is peace,” the peace committee member said.
Later, senior citizens, district officials, prominent citizens and Church leaders participated in the prize distribution ceremony for the winners.
