GUWAHATI: The Inter University East Zone Badminton (M) Tournament 2018-19 kicked off today at Gauhati University. Altogether 47 universities from Eastern part of India are participating in the tournament. Inaugurating the tournament GU Vice –Chancellor Dr. Mridul Hazarika said this type of sports not only build integration among the participants but also build their sports carrier. Gauhati University is lucky enough to host this national badminton event and now a day’s in sports students have lot of opportunities to explore their talents- Dr. Hazarika said.
Welcoming the shutllers and delegates Dr. Ranjan Kr Kakati, Director, Students’ Welfare, GU said Gauhati University is a premier higher education institution in the NE States and trying to promote sports among the students by organising such type of national events. This year Gauhati University will be organising three national events like Inter varsity Badminton (M), Basketball (W) and Judu (W) at university campus.
Attending the function as Chief Guest Pradip Chaliha, renowned badminton player felt happy and shared his nostalgic sports memories in the seventies. He also said that GU has been organising this national event after a long period and the initiative taken by Directorate of Students’ Welfare, Gauhati University is appreciable. Registrar of Gauhati University, Dr. Suesh Kr. Nath also spoke to the audience and wishes all a very best of luck. Dr. Nath also said GU is trying to make this event a grand success.
