SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills police have started the process of repatriating former Bangladeshi Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, who was recently acquitted by a local court here.
East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said police have received an order from the court and it was mentioned that Ahmed will have to be repatriated at the earliest.
Marak said he could not specify any date as to when Ahmed will be finally repatriated to Bangladesh “since it is a lengthy process”. He informed that the police at first have to write to the state government for deporting Ahmed and the government will then take up the matter with the Centre.
The matter will then be taken up at the Ministry of External Affairs level, which will take it up with its counterpart in Bangladesh.
East Khasi Hills police would not be able to deport Ahmed until they get the necessary clearances.
Ahmed after being arrested in Shillong got bail and he was staying in the city. He will stay here till the time he is deported.
Ahmed was arrested in the city three and a half years ago for not possessing valid documents. He had, however, claimed that he was kidnapped in Bangladesh and dumped in Shillong.
