GUWAHATI: Assam police has on the basis of its investigation and reports, confirmed that Munna Baruah, nephew of ULFA (I) commander-in chief, Paresh Baruah, has joined the militant outfit.
Munna, 24, had gone “missing” from Digboi in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district since Thursday.
Family members of Munna, who was working in Digboi Refinery (Indian Oil Corporation Limited) as a trainee, had lodged a missing report at Digboi police station and had informed Chabua police station on November 15.
Tinsukia superintendent of police, Mugdhajyoti Mahanta has confirmed that police has reports that Munna Baruah has joined ULFA (I).
However, the family members of Munna have not received any official information from the police in this regard.
“We have not been officially told by police regarding the news that he has joined ULFA (I),” Munna’s father and the ULFA (I) chief’s elder brother, Bimal Baruah, told the media on Sunday.
A resident of Chabua, Bimal Baruah said that his last contact with his son was over phone on November 15.
“He has not contacted us since Thursday. We have no idea what might have led him to take the decision. Physically also, he was not that strong as he was on medication for back pain,” Baruah, who appeared visibly unhappy with the information, said.
Of late, a hiring drive by ULFA (I) has been doing the rounds with reports of an increasing number of young men and women joining the militant outfit, which was very active during the 1980s and 1990s.
